On May 6th 1960, Doug was born in what was referred to then, as the new wing of the Peel Memorial Hospital.
Doug has continued to call Brampton his home for the past fifty years.
As a graduate from Central Peel Secondary School, Doug continued his education at Humber College of Applied Arts where he obtained a diploma in Horticulture.
Doug used his knowledge of horticulture as a summer employee for the Credit Valley Conservation Authority and later a full time employee for the City of Brampton, until the mid 1980’s at which time he ventured out into the private sector.
Doug feels he is one of the fortunate ones to have been able to call Brampton his home for not only himself, but also his family. Doug has been married to his wife Debbie for twenty seven years, also a graduate of Central Peel and together they have raised their children Jake and Carly both graduates of Mayfield Secondary School.
As the chair of the Brampton Clean City Committee, a City Council Appointed volunteer position, a passion of Doug’s is the environment and protecting it. “We have some of the most beautiful parks and naturalized green spaces in the Province and we must work to protect them, we must recognize the need for co-operation between the developers, the land owners and the conservation authorities to ensure these areas are protected, conservation through co-operation is essential”, states Doug.
Growing up in Brampton provided Doug with many opportunities to be involved and participate in many different activities, such as sports and recreation. It was through these opportunities Doug became involved as a volunteer, as a President, as a referee and as a coach to be certain these would exist for the future generations. His belief is that providing the facilities and access to our recreational programs is very important to health and well being of our youth,
but what is equally just as important is providing the opportunity to all.
Doug has seen many changes within the City of Brampton and there will be many more, with many more challenges. He believes that if we tap into the diversity of our community as we face these challenges, we will achieve and maintain a safe and sustainable City.
This will be the core of Brampton’s strength as we move forward.
Doug’s belief is that Municipal Government is the most open, the most accessible level of Government that allows you the stakeholders to voice your concerns and ideas to implement change.
Let’s make that change

Doug, as an active member of the Brampton Clean City Committee and currently the Chairperson, has been instrumental at getting the message out regarding the importance of having a litter free City to school and community groups. Doug has acted as the Committee’s spokesperson on City TV’s Breakfast Television, as well as on Rogers Cable Daytime Live promoting Brampton’s efforts to have a clean, safe city.
Doug has also taken the “hands on” approach in leading community clean ups and helping to organize events to promote the Committees goals. Aligned with Doug’s work on the Committee, the Whillans family has led by example; adopting a park space and working tirelessly to keep it clean for the enjoyment of the Residents.
Fact: to date in 2010, the Brampton Clean City Committee has been able to instrument well over 70,000 residents to take part in our annual clean ups.
Doug was involved for a number of years with the City of Brampton’s Sports Alliance Group, ensuring sports and recreation continues to flourish in Brampton. He is a former President of the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association and has been recognized by the City of Brampton as a recipient of its Long-term Service Award; as well the Ontario Lacrosse Association honoured Doug for his “unselfish commitment to the development of Lacrosse in Ontario”.

Doug is a contributing member on the Brampton Clean City Committee and is always ready to assist in whatever promotion he can possibly give for that Committee. I feel he is a "people person" who is not only popular with his peers but to the younger generation as well. His sense of humour will probably get him through the rough patches and endear him to others. He is very knowledgable about the Brampton area-particularly his ward-and finds himself caring about the environment and those residing in his ward.

We first met Doug years ago during his involvement with Brampton Minor Lacrosse. We became acquaintances and supported each other, when we both became Presidents of our respective clubs and ended up steadfast friends. He possesses an unselfish commitment to his community dedicating countless volunteer hours on various projects. He is a hard worker both in his profession (being building contractors, we have used his services many times) and his volunteer work. A more loyal and trustworthy candidate (and friend) you will not find. Doug, I wish you all the best in your campaign.

I first met Doug while we were both employees at Brampton Plumbing and Heating Supplies Ltd. I had recently purchased a new house and had some issues and questions in regards to by-laws and policies. Doug didn’t have all the answers, but he was able to direct me to the appropriate departments at City hall where I was able to voice my concerns and have the issues resolved. He is definitely the person that I would like to see represent me on City Council.
